Hailed by buyers and the motoring press alike, the release of the new Alfa Romeo Giulietta in 1954 was a landmark event. With it, Alfa Romeo established its “small car, maximum performance” maxim that would profoundly infuse its model offerings from that point. The debut of the Giulietta created an unqualified sensation with demand quickly outpacing supply within just a couple of days, causing Alfa Romeo to reconsider its processes and adopt a new identity as a high-volume manufacturer. Designed by Pinin Farina using a modified Giulietta Sprint Coupe chassis, Alfa Romeo’s dashing Giulietta Sports Spider was introduced in 1955 at the vocal insistence of famed New York importer Max Hoffmann, who astutely recognized how well the small British and German sports cars were received at the time in America. Delivering brisk performance including the ability to nudge the all-important 100-mph mark, the Giulietta Spider featured a rev-happy, all-alloy 1.3-litre twin-cam ‘four’, a robust unitized steel body/chassis, and a curb weight less than 1,900 pounds. Svelte, sporting, and adventurous, the body design remains a sporting icon and one of Pinin Farina’s very best, with a certain timeless elegance that continues to captivate all who experience it today.

From their respective debuts, both the Giulietta Sprint and Spider provided an intoxicating blend of character, performance, and handling. Predictably, however, pent-up demand built for an enhanced version tailored for buyers with racing aspirations. To that end, in 1956, the Giulietta Sprint and Spider Veloce variants were unleashed, with higher-performance engines and modified bodywork. Tweaks included raised engine compression to 9.1:1, plus a pair of twin-throat Weber carburetors, and revised camshaft profiles, with these measures boosting power output some 15 percent. Top-speed capability vastly improved to a heady 115 mph and perhaps most importantly, throttle response was transformed. Just 2,796 examples of the top-specification Giulietta Spider Veloce were produced in all, and every surviving example remains coveted as a true collector and enthusiast favorite.

This Giulietta Spider Veloce offered here is undoubtedly one of the finest examples in recent memory. A letter on hand from Marco Fazio of the Alfa Romeo Historic Motoring Documentation Center in Italy confirms it was manufactured on December 12, 1958, and the accompanying Certificate of Origin confirms this Giulietta retains the matching numbers engine. Purchased by a true Midwestern Alfa Romeo connoisseur, this magnificent example provided an ideal starting point for a top-quality, concours-level professional restoration which was executed over a three-year timeframe from 2009 to 2012 by Alfisti Motorsports of Bloomington, Illinois. Receipts on file document the many NOS parts used, and the expense and intensive effort in obtaining them. The engine and transmission were rebuilt by Richard Stevens, the renowned Alfa Romeo racer and engine builder based out of Florida. Gauges were rebuilt by Palo Alto Speedometer, and many interior components were sourced from Re-Originals. Heavy research and attention to correctness were integral to the restoration and the Spider remains as impressive underneath – including original spot welds – as it does on its sexy exterior. In testimony to its exceptional, top-quality restoration, this Spider Veloce earned top honors at the 2011 AROC meeting held in Lexington, Kentucky, where it profoundly impressed the judges scrutinizing it. Importantly, the highly responsive engine retains its original air box plenum, Weber carburetors, and all correct parts and fittings are in place. As offered, this top-specification Giulietta Spider Veloce shows less than 200 miles since restoration, and a large file documents the meticulous restoration work lavished on it. Additionally, the consignor has applied for an Alfa Romeo Classiche Certificate. Eligible for great events including the California Mille, Colorado Grand, and other desirable vintage rallies worldwide, this impeccable 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider Veloce is an ideal example for any enthusiast and would certainly be a wonderful addition to a collection of sporting legends.
