1.6-litre air-cooled flat-four engine, 46 HP, four-speed manual gearbox in rear transaxle, independent front suspension, swing-axle rear suspension, four-wheel hydraulic brakes; wheelbase: 94”

Volkswagen’s Thing was also known as the Kurierwagen in West Germany, the Trekker in the UK, and the Safari in Mexico, sharing its floor pan with the Type 1 Karmann-Ghia and flat-four engine and transaxle layout with the Beetle. Despite that pedigree, critics thought The Thing looked a little like the illegitimate love-child of shipping container and a Jeep, but die-hard VW fans knew they made a fantastic beach car or yacht tender in the mold of the classic Fiat Jolly. They were available in the USA for just three years and survivors have long enjoyed “cult” status for their elemental design, durability, reliability, and air-cooled powerplants.

The owner of this VW Thing searched for over a year to find a rust-free specimen with a straight body retaining all original parts. In addition to a bare-metal refinish in the original Sunshine Yellow, the floor was media-blasted and coated with a Kevlar weatherproof texture and the seats were professionally reupholstered using original Volkswagen materials in the special-order, two-tone waterproof yellow plaid and black motif. Very few factory options were available, and this Thing has three - the plaid waterproof seating surfaces, one-year-only black Euro-spec door handles and light housings and running boards. All rubber seals were removed and replaced. The convertible top frame was disassembled and powder-coated in original black, and a brand new German Haartz cloth top cover is freshly installed. This Thing drives exceptionally well and is meticulously clean throughout. The engine was rebuilt by a marque specialist using only the best correct parts available. The four-speed manual gearbox is original and fully rebuilt to match and allows easy highway speeds. The underpinnings were fully rebuilt as well, for a smooth and enjoyable ride, and the Thing rides on the original and fully restored 1974 wheels mounting a new set of radial tires. Other outstanding features include a convertible top boot cover, slide-in side windows complete with original carrying cases, coco floor mats and glove box.

This Thing was restored by the best people in the business for a very serious private collector. It would make the perfect summer beach vehicle or cottage cruiser, right at home in The Hamptons or Malibu. With its “function and fun” dual nature and driven by one of the world’s most famous power plants, it’s no wonder that these classic Things attract attention and admiration everywhere they appear today.
