Firmly ranked among the 20th Century’s greatest innovators, the rich legacy of Fred and Augie Duesenberg continues stronger than ever today. As racing dominance brought intense demand for a Duesenberg road car, the Model A was launched at the 1920 New York Automobile Salon. A race-bred tour de force, the Model A was America’s first production car with inline eight-cylinder power and four-wheel hydraulic brakes, which helped Duesenberg’s Jimmy Murphy take victory at the 1921 French Grand Prix. Despite early acclaim, Model A sales suffered with Fred Duesenberg’s insistence on conversion to a new SOHC cylinder head. Built with uncompromising quality, including bodies primarily built by Millspaugh and Irish, the Model A was very expensive with only an approximate 650 built. However, the stellar reputation earned by Duesenberg convinced E.L. Cord to add the marque to his holdings in 1926.

The subject of famed artist John Souder’s work for the official 2015 ACD Festival poster, this gorgeous 1923 Duesenberg Model A Sport Touring is certified by the ACD Club. Known ownership dates to the 1940s, when Minnesota’s Laverne Skoglund purchased it. According to oral history, he and Fred Benson, his close friend from Illinois, thoroughly enjoyed their Model As during the 1940s and 1950s, including trips to Florida pulling travel trailers with their Duesenbergs. Bob Agle, a friend of the consignor and his late brother, purchased the Model A in 1990. Mr. Agle soon began a restoration after he brought the car to his home in Ohio, but passed away before completion. The consignor purchased the car from Mr. Agle’s estate and the restoration was completed 2005-2010 by Jerry Smith of Boonville, Indiana, who performed all phases except the engine and upholstery, which were handled by Tom Rasmussen’s Odyssey Restorations in Spring Lake Park, Minnesota and Mike Teal of Newburgh, Indiana, respectively. Of particular importance to knowledgeable collectors, and as confirmed by the ACD Certification, this rare Model A retains its original chassis, engine and body.

Following completion, this rare and beautifully restored Duesenberg has garnered an impressive string of awards in judged shows and concours events. Under AACA judging, the Model A earned all award levels including the Grand National and National Award (2016). With the ACD Club, this Model A has garnered Primary, Senior, Senior Emeritus, and Best Duesenberg honors in 2016. Most recently during 2017, the Model A was shown for the first time in a CCCA event, where it received Primary recognition. Concours awards included Best of Class at Hilton Head (2010) and at Keeneland (2012 and 2014), plus the Lion Award at St. John’s (2011). Shared with automotive enthusiasts and displayed for the past several years at the Auburn Cord Duesenberg Automobile Museum in Auburn, this Model A has also participated in the famous Duesenberg Drag Races. This historic first-generation Duesenberg is well-equipped for touring pleasure with a rear windscreen, which folds into side windows as needed. A tool kit is built into the driver’s door, and dual side-mounted spares, a rear-mounted luggage trunk, and a top boot plus a complete set of side curtains and the ACD Club certification package (Number D-225) complete the ensemble. As the foundation of the Duesenberg road-car legacy, this example provides a truly fitting link to its inspired creators with its beauty, technical sophistication, and multiple award-winning restoration.
