There was no shortage of brilliance from America’s car builders in the 1950s. Bright colors, chrome, and gadgets galore were all available on any car. Of course, a utilitarian car could still be had in either a Ford or Plymouth, but for those who wished to step up to a jewel bedazzled work-of-art, Mercury had the answer with the Montclair. Introduced as part of Mercury’s line-up for 1955, the Montclair was Mercury’s premium car for those who had deep pockets and wanted a bit more dazzle in their motorcar.

Offered here is a gorgeous example of Mercury’s boulevard cruiser in the way of a top-of-the-line 1955 Montclair convertible finished in an attractive Alaska White. Riding on an immense 119-inch wheelbase, the Montclair was made for a dashing arrival at the country club. The story of this Montclair is rather interesting, as it sat in storage for 40 years before being discovered and subsequently restored to the show winning condition it presents in today. This is a full and complete restoration on a numbers-matching car that returned it to factory-new condition. This Montclair also is fully equipped with every factory option that was available at the time. Everything about this wonderful convertible speaks to an era of automotive design that has long passed, but never forgotten. An enormous twin biplane grille features acres of chrome, while the sides are adorned with trim spears and chevrons for the jet-inspired look. Dual search lights are mounted on the cowl and a rear continental kit adds to its dramatic length. Its appearance is enhanced by wide whitewall tires mounted on chrome wire spoke rims. Power comes from Mercury’s 198 horsepower V-8 in an engine compartment that is tidy and nicely sorted. As with any cruiser from the 1950s, this Montclair has plenty of room for the whole family with a front bench seat and a folding arm rest for rear passengers. The dashboard, speedometer and gauges give the allure of a jet fighter cockpit and the expansive wraparound front windshield offers a clear panoramic view of the open road.

American cars from the 1950s are a chapter unto themselves with their immense size, abundance of chrome, and powerful V-8 engines that easily propel them to modern highway speeds and beyond. For the very best in a Mercury, this Montclair is an award-winning car that’s sure to gather attention wherever it goes.
