History can repeat itself. In creating the reborn SLR in 2003, it recaptured the moment 50 years earlier when Mercedes-Benz had presented their first Sport Leicht Rennsport (Sport Light Racer) based on the famous W196, as the ultimate achievement in automotive performance. The new car, which was a collaboration between Stuttgart, Germany’s Daimler-Benz and McLaren Technology Center in Working, Surrey, UK, captured the very essence of that original machine in a modern cutting-edge type of machine. Directly aimed at competitors such as the Porsche Carrera GT and the Ferrari Enzo, this supercar has it all. Using a specially designed all-aluminum 5.4-litre engine fitted with a Twin-screw super charger that push this car from 0-to-60 miles per hour in just 3.4 seconds. Transmitting this incredible power to the rear wheels is the AMG five-speed automatic Speedshift R transmission, which had three different settings for Comfort, Sport or Manual, the last of which offered three more settings depending on how aggressive one wanted to be. When Motor Trend did their test drive of a prototype SLR, they noted that the turn-in was beyond crisp, and a tendency to oversteer was found due to its rather short wheelbase.

According to Car and Driver magazine, they were able to go the quarter mile in 11.2 seconds and achieved a top speed of 130 mph. Given enough room, a top speed of 208 miles per hour was achieved. Drawing on the two concerns experienced with Formula 1 racing, a carbon fiber monocoque, carbon-ceramic brake system was developed using 15” discs to the front with 14” discs to the rear. Also helping to control this coupe was an active rear-spoiler which could increase downforce or act as an airbrake. Creature comforts were not over looked either, with swing-up doors for easy access and exit, plus the custom crafted full leather seats, full climate-control and a premium sound system surround the occupants with the finest automotive speakers available.

While some referred to the SLR as a sports coupe, its front mid-engine design earned it the designation of a Grand Tourer which put it in the same league as the Maserati 997 with its 390 horsepower V-8, or Aston Martin’s V-12 Vanquish which topped out with 460 horsepower. The SLR really was in a league of its own.

Finished in Crystal Galaxie Black, this stunning example of the Mercedes-Benz McLaren super car is a masterpiece of art, design, innovation, engineering and raw power beautifully combined. Showing just under 550 miles from new, this SLR has been in the care of a dedicated collector whose main goal was the preservation of a masterpiece. While many owners of these automobiles used them for the purpose for which they were born, this example was held back and has been maintained exactly as it was constructed. Included are such extras as the original holder plus all five of the manuals and service books, factory trickle charger for the battery, and the original first-aid kit. This incredible machine is still riding on its original Michelin tires, 255/35ZR19s up front with the wider 295/30ZR19s to the rear. Showing virtually no wear, this is a unique opportunity to buy what it probably one of the lowest mileage McLaren SLR coupes available and, in the grand scheme of things, the new owner will find this car has been well worth the wait.
