Reporting excitedly from the March 1961 Geneva Salon, Autosport magazine’s correspondent announced, “The E-Type Jaguar has made its electrifying appearance, and at one stride Britain takes the lead in the Grand Touring market of Europe.” His statement was no exaggeration, with the XKE following up its Geneva triumph by stealing the show soon after in New York. Ever since, the XKE, alternatively known as the E-Type, received almost universal praise for its design excellence, race-bred performance, and sensuous bodylines that continue to captivate all onlookers. The XKE is also renowned as one of only a few automobiles on permanent display at New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Based upon a competition-style rigid steel monocoque body shell with the front suspension mounted upon a front subframe, the new XKE clearly descended from the glorious D-Type sports racers that dominated Le Mans during the 1950s by winning there over three consecutive years spanning 1955 through 1957. The E-Type’s advanced and highly effective independent rear suspension was elegantly designed by Jaguar engineer Bob Knight and proven on the E1A development “mule,” also known as ‘XKE-101’ and the promising E2A sports-racer campaigned by Team Cunningham at Le Mans in 1960.

A highly functional and attractively sporting interior treatment and the well-developed, 3.8-litre DOHC ‘XK’ engine inherited directly from the outgoing XK150S made the XKE an ideal two-place Grand Touring car. Delivering breathtaking performance to match its appearance, the XKE gained immediate and lasting fame as the world’s first series-production sports car capable of nudging the magical 150-mph speed barrier. E-Type production began with cars for Jaguar’s all-important export markets in March 1961, followed by production for the UK Home Market commencing in July. While the basic E-Type design kept pace with the changing times and regulatory environment throughout its run, the earlier ‘Series I’ cars are particularly valuable and coveted today for their unadulterated performance, purposeful aircraft-type switchgear, and pure, projectile-like bodylines with thin bumpers and sleekly covered headlamps. Today, knowledgeable collectors gravitate to the earliest “external bonnet latch, flat floor, welded louver” cars, exemplified by this very special 1961 Jaguar XKE Roadster.

Numbered 875240, this 1961 Jaguar XKE Roadster is an original left-hand drive example with all three of the aforementioned, defining features characteristic of the earliest of the series produced. According to its corresponding Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust certificate, 875240 was built on 17 July 1961, factory-finished in cream over red with a black soft top. Following shipment to Jaguar Cars New York, it was sold to first owner Duke Manufacturing Corp. of Jersey City, New Jersey, on September 1, 1961. Having covered only an approximate 32,000 miles at the time of cataloguing, 875240 is a wonderful matching numbers example of one of the earliest XKEs ever produced, retaining the original engine, gearbox, chassis and body, consistent with the JDHT certificate. Further, the body number is stamped on the bonnet. Restored under previous ownership and resplendent in silver over a dark blue interior and fitted with a dark blue soft top, this stellar early XKE also features a correct period Motorola AM radio. Desirable additional items include a tool roll, operating and service manual, maintenance/service receipts, a spare wheel/tire, and roadside jack. A recent and thorough detailing under the current owner ensures its wonderful visual presentation. A truly wonderful example of a true high-water-mark in sporting automobiles, this 1961 Jaguar E-Type Roadster is one of the finest, and rarest, of all, with its external bonnet-latch, flat-floor and welded-louvers it is unquestionably the most sought-after car from this game-changing series.
