A fast, yet elegant and luxurious Grand Tourer, 3500GT was the first true Maserati produced in any serious numbers. Steeped in the venerable Modenese company’s victorious racing heritage, the 3500GT employed a tubular chassis frame and a DOHC ‘twin plug’ six-cylinder engine derived from that of the 350S sports racing car of 1956. Engineering was overseen by none other than Giulio Alfieri, who developed the 250F Grand Prix car into a World Championship winner and would soon create the immortal Tipo 60/61 'Birdcage' sports racer, ensuring the outstanding performance of the 3500GT. Bodies for the 3500GT Spyders were generally produced by Vignale, while production coupes featured the innovative patented ‘Superleggera’ (Super Light) construction technique by Carrozzeria Touring. Interiors were handsomely designed, beautifully appointed with rich Connolly leather upholstery and equipped with a wide array of useful instrumentation, while the spacious luggage compartment proved useful on long-range, cross-country jaunts at speeds up to 130 mph. According to published sources, just 2,223 examples of the 3500GT were built in all from 1958 to 1964.
Numbered AM101*524*, this desirable and pure early-production 3500GT Coupe was factory-equipped with front disc brakes and a carbureted powerplant. According to the historical document package supplied by Maserati Classiche, AM101*524* was ordered from Officine Alfieri Maserati on June 2, 1959 and delivered new on July 21, 1959 as a direct sale to customer Dr. Arnaldo Cadini of Prato, the capital city of the Province of Prato, in the Tuscany region of Italy. Elegantly finished in Bianco Neve (white) over Blue Connolly leather upholstery and fitted with Borrani disc-type wheels, the 3500GT retains these features today and includes a spare disc wheel and tool kit. The 3500GT later made its way to Seattle, Washington, where it benefited from the thoughtful care of one Mr. Quinnell for 30 years. Presented in its exceptionally original and unrestored form, AM101*524* is a wonderfully preserved early example of one of Maserati's most celebrated classic GT models.
Maserati S.p.A. of Modena confirms with original Certificate of Origin that all chassis, engine, and body numbers are matching as the vehicle left the factory. Additionally, all Maserati Classiche parchment records accompany this car, including the Internal Factory Order, Historical Information Sheet, Technical Data Sheet, Technical & Aesthetic Characteristics, End of Line Data Sheet, and Delivery Note. A sight to behold for the Maserati aficionado and preservation purist, AM101*524* also retains all original trim, lenses, glass, plaques, emblems, cabin and luggage compartment upholstery, floor pans, undercoating, sheet metal, and equipment. The vehicle is also retains most of its original factory-applied paint. Sitting behind the wheel of this 3500GT is like stepping back into time and a true joy to experience. In addition to the Maserati Classiche documents, the sale of AM101*524* also includes a matching spare tire assembly and roadside jack. Recently, the car reemerged from storage and a complete brake service was performed, with components rebuilt by California specialists. Thanks to the considerate 30 years of stewardship from Mr. Quinnell and its prior caretakers, this 3500GT remains pure, unrestored, and unadulterated. As such, it will certainly provide an excellent candidate for competitive preservation classes at significant concours events worldwide.
