Named after an exotic, hot and dusty North African wind current, Maserati’s sleek Ghibli debuted at Turin in 1966. Immediately, the Ghibli enjoyed praise from the motoring press and intense demand from the era’s wealthiest and most discerning buyers, despite its $19,000 MSRP. In America, the Ghibli’s high-profile owners included none other than NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain and even Ford Motor Company CEO, Henry Ford II. Cloaked in highly seductive bodywork, initially a coupe but joined by a Spyder from 1969, the Ghibli was penned by Italian design genius, Giorgetto Giugiaro, whose career culminated in “Car Designer of the Century” honors in 1999 and the coveted Matita d’Oro (Golden Pencil) award in 2017. The Ghibli’s performance was – and remains – electrifying, with power delivered by Maserati’s race-bred DOHC, dry-sump 4.7-litre V-8 engine breathing through a quartet of Weber twin-choke carburetors and mated to a choice of ZF five-speed or automatic gearboxes. While capable of ‘supercar’ performance levels comparable to Lamborghini’s outrageous mid-engine Miura and Ferrari’s harder-edged 365 GT /4 Daytona, the Ghibli remains an equal today for its exceptional 2+2 comfort, all-around drivability, balance, and forgiving handling. Just 1,274 Ghiblis were produced in total through 1972. Today, the Ghibli continues to exemplify Maserati’s unique character and defy the passage of five decades.

Offered here is a first year Ghibli in classic Italian Red that has just emerged from 30 years of long-term single ownership. It is known that it has had one repaint, but all else appears to remain original to the car. The svelte bodylines of the Ghibli are nicely displayed in this example, which rides on its correct factory magnesium Campagnolo wheels. All exterior trim is accounted for and all door seams and panel gaps are just as Maserati built them. Maserati’s signature Trident trademark leads the way at the center of the grille and a simple, yet elegant, design is found at the rear with the Maserati name written on the rear trunk. Most interesting is that the Ghibli was designed with two fuel doors so that it could be fueled up from either side. The repaint was commissioned in this Ghibli’s original color in order to preserve its authentic factory look. The interior is original to the car and is complete. There are no major rips or blemishes in the upholstery, all door and kick panels are in good condition, and the carpets also remain original. In fine GT fashion, the dashboard layout provides a true driver’s environment with its expansive layout across the entire length so that all gauges can be quickly inspected at a glance. A large center console houses the shifter, radio, and air vents, while a real wood tri-spoke steering wheel adds the crowning touch. The engine in this Ghibli is the 4.7-litre dual-overhead-camshaft alloy V-8 engine delivering 330 horsepower. The engine compartment is largely original and looks to have received periodic maintenance. This wonderful Ghibli has been recently driven but may require some mechanical review and proper service before returning to regular road use.

While many would argue that Maserati's real roots were in racing cars, the fact is the company is far better known for its competition-flavored GT road cars. The Ghibli was one of those spectacular machines. The term “it’s only original once” certainly applies here as this Ghibli has just one repaint from new and enough overall originality to be a preservation-class car. No collection is complete without a fine Italian GT and this Ghibli can easily answer the call.
