Rooted in a prototype all-terrain utility vehicle designed by Toyota during the early 1950s, Toyota’s BJ gained the “Land Cruiser” nameplate by 1954. Quickly earning a stellar reputation for ruggedness and practicality, the Land Cruiser was soon available along a wide range of chassis lengths and body styles. Exports of the short-wheelbase FJ40 Land Cruiser to the United States began in 1960 and for much of the next decade, it was Toyota’s best seller in the crucial American market, where it was offered through 1983. Japanese domestic market production ended the following year. Supplementary models for the U.S. included the FJ45 four-door, pickup, and wagon from 1963 to 1967, and family-oriented FJ55 from 1968 to 1979.

Much of the FJ40’s enduring success is due to simplicity and durability, plus remarkable ease of maintenance, repair, and operation. The Land Cruiser’s 3.9-litre F-Series inline six-cylinder engine was in fact closely modeled after Chevrolet’s renowned 235 cubic-inch light-truck engine, topped by an improved GMC-derived cylinder head and rated at 125 horsepower for the U.S. market. More importantly, this powerplant delivered stump-pulling torque at a 2,000-rpm peak, powering the FJ through the most demanding terrain. Changed very little throughout production, the FJ40 did receive detail refinements throughout its lifespan, including the addition of a four-speed transmission in 1974 and a bump in engine displacement and output to 4.2 litres and 135 horsepower respectively for 1975. In addition to civilian use, the vehicles and their various sub-models inevitably saw military service in several countries and figured prominently in several Cold War “hot spots” during the late 20th Century. Through it all, the Land Cruiser was every bit as dependable, durable, and capable as the famous “Jeep,” and arguably even more so. Of all surviving Land Cruisers, though, the FJ40 remains the most recognized, imitated, and appreciated today. While effective and in demand when new, precious few of these rugged and capable workhorses survive today, rendering top-quality examples very rare and desirable as true on- and off-road icons.

The classic FJ40 Land Cruiser also lends itself extremely well to custom modifications, making a great basic vehicle even better and far more capable than the original article ever was. This 1974 Toyota FJ40 Land Cruiser is a perfect case in point, with more than three times the power of the original ‘six’ delivered by a custom power team comprising 6.0-litre Chevy Vortec V-8 engine driving a GM four-speed automatic overdrive transmission. Ample cooling is provided by a large-capacity aftermarket aluminum radiator. A set of AutoMeter gauges monitor vital functions. Driving enjoyment is nicely enhanced with the addition of a tilt steering column, GM power steering gear, plus a custom padded steering wheel, and braking has been upgraded with four-wheel disc brakes and a Wilwood power booster. Comfort is heightened with aftermarket sport seats trimmed in cloth upholstery and valuables are safe inside the added locking center console. The exterior is enhanced with checker-plate rear-quarter guards and rear fender flares, while the FJ rolls on a set of Fuel custom wheels surrounded by huge Toyo Open Country mud- and snow-rated 35x12.5x18 all-terrain tires. Should the powerful GM Vortec V-8 engine, drivetrain, and massive rolling stock ever be unable to power you through the worst off-road situation, a front-mounted Smittybilt winch can get you out of trouble. Equally capable of off-road use and around-town enjoyment, it is a truly outstanding example of Toyota’s classic Land Cruiser, upgraded and ready to drive and enjoy.
