Born during the height of the Art Deco movement, when everything had to be streamlined, the Lincoln Zephyr was right at home. Under the direction of Edsel B. Ford, E.T. “Bob” Gregorie had given Lincoln’s new medium-priced line a look that was immediately recognizable; unique to the line but with just a hint of its relation to the entry-level Ford passenger cars. One of the more popular models in the Zephyr line was the three-window business coupe which presented a sleek and aerodynamic silhouette. In pure-stock form, these coupes have often become the most sought-after body style by collectors.

In the 1990s, several builders took the hulks of several original cars and created several stunning street rods based on the Zephyr business coupe. With a limited supply of originals to choose from, Deco Rides, a leading provider of street rods, created their own version of the Lincoln Zephyr coupe. While many of them are attractive rides, few of them have achieved the status of the fabulous “El Zorro”. Our consignor tells us that the name was given to the car when it was first shown, and it has just kind of stuck. Still titled as a 1939 Lincoln, the car was acquired by the owner in 2015. On one of the car’s first outings it was entered the prestigious Greenwood Car Show in the Seattle, Washington area. With its Sun-Glow Copper finish, and the fact that its beauty is evident from any angle, it was awarded Best of Show over a field of over 800 other competitors. An impressive result, no doubt. In 2016, this stunning car returned to Greenwood where, again, everyone seemed to love the car. Not feeling comfortable with awarding the Best of Show to the vehicle two years in a row, the owner was thanked again for bringing such an incredible car and told that it would be honored for its outstanding passenger compartment with the Best Interior Award.

When a car of this beauty and caliber are created, taken to shows and come home with the best hardware to be had, one might expect that it must be a trailer queen. While El Zorro might be treated with kid gloves in preparations for show, it is also very usable and has known to be seen on casual outings on the road. Very functionalindeed, it is more than just rolling art. In fact, according to our consignor, he has taken this Zephyr coupe out for a couple of recent performance test runs, easily finding the century mark on the speedometer on what he describes as “an undisclosed stretch of highway.”

Since the build was completed by Deco Rides, the owner has continued to improve upon perfection. An upgraded air suspension system can gently lift this slammed coupe to a more convenient driving height. A modern Vintage Air system has been installed which keeps the occupants comfortable regardless of the weather outside, and limited seating has been added to accommodate up to three passengers in addition to the driver. If going down the highway in this ultra-cool ride isn’t enough for you, there is a complete sound system to entertain. Among the most useful items is the “reversing camera” because, as our consignor says, you simply can’t see out of the chopped top’s split rear backlight. Other features include the custom alloy wheels and a highly detailed engine bay and chassis.

While the car has garnered several awards in the Pacific Northwest, El Zorro will very likely bring home even more accolades in regions where it has not been shown. This stunning Zephyr comes from a prominent west coast collector and amongst his many important cars, this garners more attention than anything he has ever owned , whether standing still or traveling down the road. It would be safe to say, that same sentiment will be shared by its next fortunate owner.
