There are only certain special circumstances that can lead to the preservation of a car. It may have been left in a garage after a malfunction or it may have been cast aside after the passing of a family member. Whatever the circumstances, the result is usually the same; a car that is pristine, perfectly preserved, and untouched by the hands of time. These are the cars that are sought-after, not only for their condition, but also serve as the benchmark for the restoration of others like them. These cars are rare and, when they surface, they always cause a stir as they turn out to be the most desirable of their kind.

Such is the case with the 1981 Delorean DMC-12 offered here. One look at this car is all one needs to gauge its condition and authenticity. But, if that’s not convincing enough, a glance at the odometer solidifies the case. This is because there are only three dials on the odometer that have moved in this car’s 37-year existence. With just 879 actual miles, this DMC is a car that is wonderfully preserved. The smooth and sleek design of the DMC was like no other car on the road. Power for this DMC 12 comes from a rear-mounted 2.85 litre V-6 that was designed and built by Peugeot-Renault-Volvo under a special contract. Performance of this DMC 12 is also enhanced by a PRV five-speed manual transmission. The engine compartment on this car is clean and tidy with no alterations from factory stock. This DMC rolls on Cooper Cobra Radial GT tires mounted on standard turbine wheel covers for an excellent look. It’s equipped with an optional gray interior that presents in excellent condition with fine upholstery, clear gauges, and clean carpeting. In a marvel of design, the gullwing doors require only 11- inches of clearance outside the line of the car to open making getting in and out of tight parking places relatively easy. Documentation includes original owner’s manual, owner’s manual cover, stainless steel car care kit, DeLorean Tech Owner’s Guide and Parts Manual and miscellaneous parts

The recent news that the DeLorean Motor Company will reproduce a low-volume and exclusive new DeLorean, attention to the originals will certainly increase. There are few that have been preserved with such exceptionally low miles. The desirable five-speed variant enhances this ‘Gullwing’ and, as they say, “it’s only original once”. For one of the very best in a DMC 12, this example is poised to stand the test of time.
