Produced between 1990 and 2005, the Acura NSX (badged ‘Honda NSX’ outside of North America) raised the bar for sports-car design, performance, and usability in one brilliant stroke. With lineage directly rooted in the mid-engine, V-6 powered HPX (Honda Pininfarina eXperimental) first commissioned by Honda in 1984, the idea gained the favor of company management, but with a proviso that the new car had to be as good as anything coming from competing highline manufacturers in both Italy and Germany. In fact, as the HPX evolved into the NSX (New Sportscar eXperimental), the original performance target for the project was the Ferrari 328, soon revised to the 348 as the design for the NSX neared fruition.

Decidedly exotic in appearance yet highly purposeful, the NSX was a tour de force of advanced design and engineering. Based upon a rigid, yet lightweight aluminum structure at the cutting edge of automobile design principles, the sleek NSX body was the product of specific research conducted into the 360° visibility enjoyed by pilots of the famed General Dynamics F-16 fighter jet. Notably, the NSX was the first production car produced with all-aluminum unit body and chassis construction. Chassis strength, rigidity, and resultant excellent handling qualities came courtesy of Formula 1 champion driver Ayrton Senna and his detailed input with the NSX's chief engineers while testing the prototype car at Honda's famed Suzuka circuit.

Retaining the mid-engine, rear-wheel-drive layout of the original HPX concept, the NSX was powered by a high-performance all-aluminum V-6 engine replete with dual overhead cams, four valves per cylinder, Honda's advanced Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control (VTEC) system, and PGM-FI engine management with port fuel injection. A five-speed transaxle, limited-slip differential, and fat Bridgestone Potenza radial tires transferred the 270 rated horsepower (at 7,100 RPM) output of the NSX to the pavement. Traction control, four-channel ABS, a driver’s side airbag, Acura/Bose audio system, and theft-deterrent system were other industry-leading NSX features.

Performance was outstanding as expected. Consistently, while magazine road testers reported acceleration figures and handling performance in line with its rivals including the Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1, Lotus Esprit Turbo S4, Ferrari 348tb, the NSX outbraked the Lotus and delivered much better fuel economy – 25 MPG. While its exotic competition would often wear down enthusiastic drivers after only a short stint behind the wheel, the NSX was unanimously praised for its comfort, amenities, and enjoyable driving experience, prompting Car and Driver to declare, “…the NSX is our top choice for pure driving pleasure.” Today, the original NSX continues to rank among its fortunate owners as one of the most reliable exotic cars ever manufactured, with many examples easily surpassing the 100,000-mile mark with only regular maintenance and without serious reliability issues.

Handsome in black over silver, this very striking NSX is an early example from 1991, offered in wonderful condition with fewer than 72,000 miles of use. Clean and virtually impeccable throughout, this NSX clearly benefits from exceedingly fastidious maintenance, service, and storage. The black interior is consistent with the rest of the vehicle, as are the engine bay and luggage compartment. The factory-fitted emergency tools and equipment remain in place, including the roadside jack, lug wrench, screwdriver, and air compressor. Upgrades applied to the car include a dealer-installed CD changer mounted in the trunk, keyless entry and tinted windows, ARK custom exhaust, both 1994 factory chrome wheels and the originals, upgraded Bose speakers and digital boosters, upgraded window pulleys, a new windshield and molding (installed 2011), and a factory car cover. Original dealer literature and service invoices are included with the sale of the vehicle, along with magazine articles and sales brochures, making for a complete package.
