When Ford was in the initial stages of developing the Mustang, Lee Iacocca’s idea was to create a car that everyone would love. Developed during Ford’s “Total Performance” era, a high horsepower, competition version of the car would bring a status of respect among the enthusiasts that this new sport compact was targeting. There were realizations that this would be a very limited audience, so Iacocca turned to one of America’s most famous race car drivers, a person who was already in production of a Ford powered sports roadster, the legendary Carroll Shelby. It was a match made in heaven. Starting with the 7-liter, 428 cubic-inch V-8 released in 1966, he added a few tweaks to make this a serious competition machine. Tempering the cam, raising the compression and adding a second Holley four-barrel carburetor allows to promote this engine officially at 355 HP, 20 more horses than what was available in Ford branded products. But those official figures were quite modest, for Shelby’s 428s were producing numbers a lot closer to 400 HP with 420 foot-pounds of chassis twisting torque! The Shelby GT500 was well-received in 1967 and it has now recieved legendary and are highly sought-after by connoisseurs of performance automobiles today.
Our consignor tells us this car was given a full restoration within the last decade and today it is presented in its original livery color of Wimbledon White with the Shelby Blue accent stripes. Under the hood, is just as it was when delivered new at Koons Ford in Falls Church, Virginia. Appointments include original Philco AM push-button radio, factory heater-defroster, and complete gauge package. Emblazoned on the dash panel is an autograph from the late Carroll Shelby of which he must have been beaming with the trademark smile when he was signing his name. Close examination will show that the body panels are laser straight with doors easily closing while the hood and decklids are aligned at, or above factory specs. The interior appears to be new with no sign of wear or tear to any of the soft trim.
Accompanying this car is a Deluxe Marti report which is based on factory records that show how well-appointed this car was when new. It shows that the Shelby exclusive 10-spoke alloy wheels were fitted when new, which today wear a fresh-looking set of Goodyear Speedway 250 R70X15 tires. Also added at the factory, this GT500 is equipped with power steering and power brakes. Helping to maintain peak performance is the extra cooling package, and to make life easier inside the car is the courtesy light group, fold-down “Sport-Deck” rear seat, plus shoulder harness seat belts and factory tachometer with trip odometer. A previous owner opted to remove the automatic transmission in favor of installing a proper, correct and desirable four-speed manual making for much driving enjoyment. Also included is the original spare tire with factory tools and jack properly stowed away. Having been kept in a private collection where it was stored in a climate-controlled facility and properly maintained, this car has been sorted and is turn-key ready to enjoy on the road or to be proudly displayed at a show or weekend cars and coffee event.
