Introduced for 1958, the Continental Mark III replaced the limited-production Continental Mark II of 1956-57 and Lincoln Premiere at one stroke and immediately took pride of place as the largest postwar, non-limousine American car ever built. The last model produced under Ford Motor Company’s short-lived “Continental” marque, the Mark III for 1958 was designed by John Najjar, Lincoln Chief Stylist, assisted by Elwood Engel. Beautifully proportioned, the Mark III featured a number of interesting styling cues that combined to create a visual effect that further enhanced the car’s low height and impressive overall length.

The Mark III also offered a substantial boost in power to match its commanding presence, with a 375-HP, 430 cubic-inch Mercury-Edsel-Lincoln (MEL) V-8 engine lurking underneath its long hood, with power delivered by a three-speed Turbo-Drive automatic transmission. The “Super Marauder” option added 25 HP with triple two-barrel carburetion, making the Mark III the first American production car to reach the 400-HP milestone. While weighing nearly 5,000 pounds, the Mark III was a startling performer on command, capable of 0-60 acceleration well under 10 seconds and 120 mph flat out.

Featuring modern unibody construction, the Mark III was available along four body styles, including a four-door Sedan, Landau Hardtop Sedan, two-door Hardtop Coupe, and top-of-the-line Convertible. Color and upholstery choices and standard and optional features and amenities were abundant. The new Mark III was at once larger and more expensive than a comparable Cadillac, introduced just as a painful economic recession occurred during the latter 1950s, which spurred greater interest in smaller European imports and America’s “Big Three” to develop new lines of compact models. resulting in relatively low sales of only 12,550 Continental Mark IIIs in all, including just 3,048 glamorous Convertibles.
Without doubt, the glamorous Lincoln made a bold statement when new – one that continues unchanged today, thanks to its high specifications, remarkable performance and driving experience and, of course, outrageous “Space Age” styling. Today’s collectors also benefit from enthusiastic club support, abundant parts supplies, and the renowned durability of the Mark III engine and transmission package.

The top-of-the-line 1958 Continental Mark III Convertible offered here continues to benefit handsomely from a show-quality restoration that was finished after the consignor purchased the vehicle during the latter 2000s. In 2008, this Mark III Convertible was exhibited and judged at the Duluth, Minnesota Lincoln Continental Owners’ Club (LCOC) National show, where it won the Lincoln Trophy. It has been driven only sparingly since the restoration was completed; however, the consignor has enjoyed this Continental Mark III several times on drives to and from his lake property, with each leg measuring about 215 miles, proving the vehicle has been very well-sorted, unlike so many other restored 1950s classics. Handsome in white with a black convertible top and visually striking tri-tone leather interior, it is well-equipped with the comprehensive standard Mark III features and amenities, plus the valuable, multi-part Deluxe wheel covers, AM radio, air-conditioning, and “Super Marauder” 3X2 intake system. Radial tires, stainless-steel exhaust, correct seat belts, and an auxiliary electric fuel pump further enhance this great looking and performing icon of the late 1950s. A well-known example in classic Lincoln circles, this top-quality 1958 Continental Mark III Convertible comes from a respected collector and stands ready for continued showing and enjoyment.
