Worldwide Auctioneers News Releases

Date: Aug. 4, 2011

Auburn, Indiana. August 4th, 2011. Some great celebrity cars have changed hands in Auburn over the years and Worldwide is all set to reinvent the tradition this Labor Day Weekend. Consignments for its fourth annual extravaganza, The Auburn Auction, are rolling in and the company has just confirmed that Burt Reynolds’s very own 1978 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am “Bandit” Sports Coupe, as immortalized in the 1970’s movie ‘Smokey & the Bandit, is consigned to go under the hammer. Offered at NO RESERVE, it will sell to the highest bidder regardless of price, and like all the celebrity cars in this year’s sale, will be on display for visitors to enjoy during the weekend. Starring alongside Burt Reynolds, Sally Fields and Jackie Gleason, the Trans Am became a screen legend in its own right and Burt Reynolds acquired this special example for his own use, properly restored with slight modification for the Bandit himself. It wears the full black and gold paint scheme, snowflake rims and body ground effects with flairs and spoilers. The interior is decked out in full gear, complete with embroidered Bandit portrait headrests and Cobra CB radio, all ready to check out the 10-20 of the Smokeys. “This is a great opportunity to acquire an absolutely iconic collectible car, once owned by one of Hollywood’s best known stars,” said John Kruse, Principal and Auctioneer. “We are delighted to confirm that it will be offered for sale completely without reserve, so the highest bidder on the day will go home with this very special car, whatever the price. It’s a guaranteed head turner and it’s all ready to make its next coast to coast beer run with a new owner!”

Also slated to feature alongside “Burt’s Bandit” are a 1959 Plymouth Sport Fury Convertible, bought by Richard Carpenter to celebrate the Carpenter’s first radio hit and still titled in his name, and Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger’s 1972 Oldsmobile Cutlass, complete with a 454 Stroker motor boasting 620 horsepower. Visitors might also recognize a 1963 Ford Galaxie Mayberry Police Cruiser, autographed and authenticated by “Barney Fife” star, Don Knotts, and featured again in the movie ‘We are Marshall’ with Matthew McConaughey, along with a fantastic psychedelic 1965 Gillig Bus, created to follow the legendary Grateful Dead on tour."And that's not all," said Rod Egan, Principal & Chief Auctioneer. “Look out for a fabulous selection of pre-war motorcars, American and European sports cars, classics, racers and American muscle, along with four entire private collections, offered without reserve to the highest bidder. Welcome to the new tradition in Auburn! This is our home town and we're here to bring the great cars and the great times back."

Full details on all of this year’s consignments are available online at, and interested parties can download video clips on Burt’s Bandit and other celebrity vehicles for a taste of what’s to come over the weekend. The Auburn Auction is scheduled for Friday, Saturday & Sunday, September 2nd, 3rd & 4th, at the Worldwide Auction Park, and following the success of last year’s expanded sale, this year's event gets bigger and better again with a car corral, vendor booths and great food, running in parallel with three days of auction action. The More Great Cars segment of the sale runs from September 2nd- 4th from 10am daily, with Saturday evening’s Main Event on September 3rd, a catalogue auction of exceptional motorcars. Quality consignments are still invited. Visitors can buy tickets to see all of the star vehicles consigned. Tickets are available on a daily basis, or as a discounted three day pass.
